Both bonsai trunks have turned black and one has mold was created by Novastardance

I am new to bonsai and have had both of my Jacaranda saplings for almost a month, I planted them in a mixture of lava rocks and garden soil that supposed to prevent over/under watering. I have been watering them lightly every day or at least every other day (then found out how to properly water them so started that). I even bought a uva light bulb to put in my lamp for them because not enough sunlight gets into my room. However, here are where my concerns come in; I think I may have cut the roots too short, the leaves started to wilt completely and dried out to the point where they would snap off at the slightest touch(they came off), the trunks of both trees have turned black and slightly shrunk down and one is now growing mold at the base. I'm desperate to save them so any advice you have to help me would be greatly appreciated. Please and Thank you.
