How much light? was created by jfs

I'm new to this forum so maybe I haven't posted on the right place. I am changing places so my trees won't have much natural light anymore. I have a couple of Ficus, Pines a jacaranda mimosifolia, a lemon tree, a grapefruit tree. I will only have a little window and it is not really a possibility to keep them outdoors. What kind of lights should I get to keep them healthy? Is the only thing I should care is the amount of watts? If it is, how many watts would I need?

If the great outdoors is not an option, then definitely use a full spectrum indoor lighting setup. Wattage is truly not important, luminosity is. There is, however, a correlation between the two. Higher wattage fixtures generally have a higher light output. Heat output will also be a concern unless you are using LED lamps. Outdoors if I remember correctly is somewhere between 75000-150000 lux. I've had some decent success with red/blue LED lamps placed 8-12" above my plants that had an output of 10000 lux. These were like 35-50 watt LED lamps. I suspect growth would be better under full spectrum lights with higher Wattage and increased light output. Metal halides and fluorescent lighting will have much higher Wattage usage and also increased great production. You will likely need more space for these and increased circulation to dissipate heat and prevent burning leaves and overheating this bonsai. I do not like personally like indoor setups as there are more issues with fungus, pests and etc. I sold all my tropical and cold intolerant bonsai last year and did not have to use an indoor setup. I love keeping my plants outdoors and bring them in for display only. But when space is limited you do what you need to do enjoy the art! Good luck with your bonsai!

If I need a full spectrum light, is it dangerous for humans?! I know that UV lights can cause a lot of damage to our eyes. Does a full spectrum light automatically contain UV's? Do plants need UV lights to grow or does it only help them a little?

All plants living need some UV light exposure, even people need UV light exposure. Without UV light you would nor produce usable vitamin D, also UV light helps assist with the degradation of certain byproducts in the body. Ive never measured the UB output by lamps, however, I doubt the output of UV would or should be a cauae for concern. Full spectrum light has all color of the visible and invisible light spectrum, (red blue yellow green UV is in there too.) Your flourescent lights and incandesecnt lights also emit UV wavelengths, it's part of the light spectrum. I would just not apend endless hours staring at your trees while directly under the lamp and in very close proximity if your concerned. Simply put you more than likely get more UV exposure from the sun during your daily life than what would be emitted from the lamps. Lastly full spectrum lighting is far more pleasing to the eyes than red/blue.
