Aloha all! I recently was gifted a bonsai tree. Probably the most daunting gifts I've ever received, especially with no experience with them- or plants in general for that matter. it came with a 2 sided piece of paper with generic instructions but no indication of the exact species. I've had it for about 2 weeks now and am so scared of killing it (it was a gift from my mother-in-law which doesn't help). I live in an apartment and have been keeping it next to the window with pretty decent sun but I live in Washington so it's always a hit or miss with full sunlight. I have been researching like crazy but I'm still coming up short on the exact species. I think it's a Japanese Cedar (crypomeria) but of course I could be way off. I thought it was a juniper at first but I don't think so, the pictures I've come across don't match that well. But again, I could be wrong. I tried going to a local Asian plant nursery but the guy working there was not helpful at all and basically told me (without looking at any pictures) that my tree will die if it's not outside. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. It seems to be doing well for now, I've kept the soil moist and there are new buds at the top but beyond that I don't know what I'm doing.

Looks like a Juniper to me, but not sure. What I am absolutely sure of is that it will not survive inside. The man you spoke to was right.

Agreeing that the guy knew what he was saying. Your juniper looks pretty healthy, but in the long run, it will not do well indoors.
I think it's a Juniperus Procumbens Nana, image attached for comparison.

...what they all say.... seriously, IT WILL DIE if you keep it inside. It looks very healthy now ( see all the new young growth), but that will change. Problem with junipers is that it takes a long time before signs of problems show up, and by then it is too late already.
First: get rid of all the rocks and rubbish on the soil, then find a place for it outside.
