I'm the worst kind of bonsai owner, I know. Got this little fella at Lowe's back in the fall/early winter. So far, so decent. We've lost a few leaves that begin to turn a light yellow before falling, and at this point the loss is mild- maybe 10-15 leaves at most, but alarming enough that I'm seeking help. 1) to confirm Identity (I think is a ficus family?) and 2) to help maybe keep it from getting worse and 3) see if that gluey decorative moss/rock combination needs to be addressed.
I'm watering it when the stiff gluey moss surface feels dry or in this case firm, which is about 7-10 days. When I water, that moss is soft and pliable but turns harder/crunchy as it dries out. It's getting quite a bit of artificial light- it's in my office which is lit by both LED and incandescent lights, and I try to open the blinds above him for several hours a day.
The rocks on the edge are very glued in by something, and i'm wondering if that can cause poor air flow to the soil? I'm not crazy about that pot, but what I know about ficus (if indeed this is ficus) he will hate me if I try to repot and no way I'll attempt that with the current leaf loss situation, but I think I can dig those rocks off without disturbing the roots/soil and just replace with some more sheet moss?
If all goes well with this inexpensive trial run at bonsai for me, I'd love to get a few more from reputable growers since I've always been fascinated by them. Just didn't wanna shell out the big bucks only to prove to myself that I was in over my head or simply not have the right environment for one.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can offer!

Thanks, I did search on the rocks issue. But feel like confirmation of species will help me better search for the watering and lighting issues, just need someone to put me on the right road. What research I've done one that I'm stuck between it being ficus or ligustrum, and I'm leaning towards ficus but just not 100% sure. Thanks for the suggestion, and I'll continue to use that resource.

Ficus, not in a bonsai pot, not in bonsai soil, with decorative stuff that's not used on bonsai, that's not trained like a bonsai, but is sold as bonsai.

Yes, it's a Ficus.
Take off the glued pebbles and the fake moss.
Put it outside if possible.
Don't move it around too much, ficus hate it.

Thanks so much for all of your help and suggestions. Rocks and moss are gone! I'll start researching more specifics on ficus, even if it is a ficus pretending to be a bonsai. I think I'll leave him inside, at least for a few more weeks, because we are still experiencing a few night below freezing here and there.
