Cherry Blossom 名媛直播 Grown from Seed

It's mid March now in Munich and I'd like to grow my first bonsai from seed and I choose the Japanese cherry blossom because it's my all time favorite. I've been reading and researching how to properly begin first with this , but I have a few questions that remains.
1. Selecting the seeds: I know that I can either buy it from the local garden store or from a live cherry blossom tree. It is inferred that getting fresh seeds from live trees are better. But why is it better? Is it because the fresher the seeds, the easier it is to grow it without complications? What are the differences with store bought seeds that I should be aware of? Could it be that I would buy some seeds that actually aren't viable?
2. Germination of seed: I read that some soak the seeds for 4-6 hours and then germinate the seed in a plastic container and refrigerate it for a few weeks. But according to the above article, "during this crucial time, these seeds need the full sun and moisture" and instead of a container, it suggests a large and shallow pot. Since these methods contradict each other, I'd like to be sure what exactly is the right way. If the right way is according to this article, then should I wait until April or when it's warmer to do it? It'd mid-March and the weather is quite grey, windy, and cold still.
I would assume there would be no cherry blossoms blooming yet during the first two-three years right? How many years do you think I could expect the blooming to begin?
Thank you,
Hong

Posted 5 years 10 months ago #47504Depending on the species, flowering can start after a few years to a few decades. Not sure about prunus. Hardly anybody grows these from seed.

Please read up on growing bonsai. They are not grown by keeping seedlings small. You do need a tree with a decent size trunk. Yes, a pregrown tree may be suitable - it saves you a couple of years trying to grow a tree from seed. It depends however what tree it is and how it is grown. In general, a tree from a garden center will be very straight, the lower branches cut off. You can use that but it will take years to develop something useful out of it.
If you have not even planted a seed, and are already thinking about the blossoms, you're not on the right track. Flowers are not important when you're training a tree to become a bonsai.
