Hi Just joined bonsai empire, I live in Liverpool England and bought a 6 foot giganteum 06/03/2019. I took it home and repotted into a wooden box as it was root bound in the pot it came in, after reducing the roots to fit the box 5" deep, I went onto the net to see if there are any guidelines to root pruning a giganteum. After many hours found Craig Coussins article on bonsai empire (very informative) however it appeared to conflict with others on the net as I assumed root pruning would be the same as a juniper.
Q: Have I just ruined a a lovely potential 名媛直播 (hopefully similar to Craigs pictures eventually)?
Q: Also can I top the giganteum to around 3 foot and create a new leader at the same time or wait till next year?
Q: The tree has a trunk 3" wide and potted on a base layer of grit next layer that the roots are in contact with is a mix of potting compost/grit /cat litter and finally covered with cat litter as I had no moss is this potting mixture ok?
Hope someone out there can help me?

No idea how big your tree is. This is an international forum and most of us don't speak imperial units.
Hard to tell if you ruined it without pictures and without knowing what exactly you did, how much you removed, when you did it.... etc..

Hi Auk, sorry but new to forums still have to learn protocols.
As i said I bought the tree on 06/03/2019 it was originally just over 2 metres and to fit into my car I took 30 cm off the top. When I got it home I took it out of a 15 litre pot and reduced the root ball by 15 cm around half the root ball, I also took several branches off the top 30 cm from my original cut, so the upper most branch is at 1.5 metres from the top of the root ball. The tree from the top of the root ball to the top of the tree is 1.8 metres and would like to reduce the tree to 1 metre in height when finished, any guidance and help would be greatly appreciated.
It is 11.30 PM in Liverpool and will upload pictures tomorrow. I know I have rambled on but I hope you get the idea.
Thank you,
BrianKav.

It is a species I have not worked with myself. So find out how much root pruning they can take. It does not sound like you have done anything too drastic so far.

You have indicated that
1: You have not worked with this species before.
2: You just did a significant root pruning (50%?) and repotted into a smaller container.
3: You removed the upper most branches (but did not do a trunk chop).
If it were me, I would leave it be for now and let it recover and acclimate before doing anymore work on it. Depending on proper pruning time, you might consider doing some trim work as it goes into dormancy in the fall.

A further update on my Glaucum, where I had cut off the upper most branches I now have new buds sprouting also on the lower branches where they join the trunk. I intend to rub out the upper most buds and encourage the lower ones hopefully to increase the girth of the nebari and create more foliage. I will upload pictures tomorrow

Hi latest pictures, two showing new growth (very hard to see but they are there). Another showing the height I want it to finish at (the whit tape) and the last showing a crudely wired new leader when I cut the top off, I also have another with my finger showing another leader 15cm lower down
