Hi!

I caught the gardening bug a little over a year ago and have been growing everything I possibly can since. This has led me to bonsai and bonsai has led me to you. I've been reading through y'all's posts for a week or so just sponging up all this knowledge and I think I've got a sound plan for my first tree.

I bought a little Juniper from Lowe's, made it a training box, ordered some carbon steel tools, some aluminum training wire, and a tube of pruning compound. I'm going to line the bottom of the training box with pet screen and I'm going tomorrow to a local nursery that carries bonsai equipment get some Akadama.

I've read a lot about "soil". Hotly debated, eh? I'm going with a 60% inorganic, 40% organic mix to start with in deference to my climate, Houston, Tx, and what I know of my garden. I can't see damp soil being a problem here, for anything not actually in the ground, but I'll update whether I'm wrong or not.

So, the plan is;

Keep it outside.
Pay attention to it.
Water it.
Fertilize it.
Let it grow.

Any advice, adjustments, or anything in between is fine with me. I just wanted to say hi and not be such a lurker.

Cheers!

Ah... someone who has actually done some reading in advance! Great. Not much to add, really. Yes, soil discussions can get out of hand here. But as LB say: it really does not matter all that much. For highly developed, mature trees you may want to have more control, and a substrate to get that control. For plants in training... just make sure they grow. Most important advice now is: go slow, keep it alive.

I've definitely been consciously slowing myself down. New hobbies are exciting and you wanna get going but this is literally the opposite kind of hobby.

I wish you all the luck and a long bonsai life.
As Auk said, congrats for reading first and acting later. And please, any doubts, ask here.

Hey welcome. Nice plan.

When you do rhis, keep in mind that you want the roots to spread out from the trunk so spend a bit of time gently (!) Untangling the mess you find in the pot.

Pot the plant deep enough, covering the nebari

As the plant grows, slecet a few branches as sacrifice. Let these run long, removing the foliage of themm that is near the trunk. Keep all other branches short need the trunk to later build the tree with.
