A friend moved away and left me with a bunch of his plant including a very sick branchy plant. I pruned back a bunch of the dead stuff and it's finally starting to get some new growth. I just can't figure out what kind of a plant it is. He thought it was a bonsai but wasn't sure what type. It doesn't quite look like any of the bonsai species I've looked into, but maybe it was just too sick? Any help identifying would be great.

Impossible to tell as this half dead plant has no leaves. If I had to guess, I''d say it could be a Zanthoxylum piperitum.

Changing my thoughts about the species from Zanthoxylum to: I have no idea.

Not clear what this is. Compare it to pictures of Euphorbia tirucalli.

It does look like a plant in need of some light though. Where is it kept?
