Leaves deteriorating and care guidance required was created by NB
Posted 5 years 11 months ago #47208Your guidance and knowledge is very much needed!
I bought a Ficus micropcarpa 名媛直播 4 days ago and I need to verify some care tips I've been given ( as they conflict with many tips online) & raise a few concerns regarding the status of my tree.
1) I've been advised to water my tree once every 5-7 days, when the soil gets dry. So far the soil feels damp and soft and looks dark, so I haven't watered it yet. Should I be watering it more frequently?
2) For the watering technique: I was advised to completely submerge the roots under water for 5-10 minutes and then drain. Is this the correct method.
3)I've been told I wouldn't need fertilizers unless the leaves start deteriorating. Is this true?
4) I have a window sill which i was planning to place the tree on, but was advised to keep it atleast 2m away from direct light as it is an indoor plant and is not well adapted to direct light. I've also been advised to move it further away, in case the leaves deteriorate. So my tree hasn't been receiving much direct sunlight is this okay?
5) How frequently should I spray the leaves?
Regarding my concern:
Today I've noticed that some leaves have holes in them, as shown in the pictures, and most of the leaves' edges are curled. What does this indicate? and what should I do?

Remove 'once every 5-7 days' from the above line. Water when needed, not according to a fixed schedule, when the soil gets dry but do not let it dry out.
2) For the watering technique: I was advised to completely submerge the roots under water for 5-10 minutes and then drain. Is this the correct method.
No. Water normally, until water comes out of the drainage hole. Note that this does require proper draining soil.
3)I've been told I wouldn't need fertilizers unless the leaves start deteriorating. Is this true?
No. If leaves start deteriorating, something is wrong. Fertilizing will not fix that, by the way.
4) I have a window sill which i was planning to place the tree on, but was advised to keep it atleast 2m away from direct light as it is an indoor plant and is not well adapted to direct light. No. Ficus likes light. Do give it a place where it will not get too hot in summer though. Don't move it either - they do not like that.
5) How frequently should I spray the leaves?
Never. It's of no use.

Check if you see bugs. Could be something else though, maybe it's still adapting to its new environment.

Posted 5 years 11 months ago #47212Ficus trees are susceptible to fungus infections, called blight. I think thats what you got on your leaves. Spray the tree with fungicide. Otherwise it will probably die. Spraying the leaves with water and to much watering makes the infection worse.
If your soil is very compact (wich i think yours are). Then the soil wont be able to absorb the water. Then you need to submerge the roots in water, make sure the top soil gets wet. But if that is the case, you then need to repot it into better soil in spring.
Good luck
