Hi all, I am hoping you guys can help me put a price this. I recently had my 90 year old tsukumo cypress die in some flooding, I had purchased the tree about 6 years ago at an estate sale. The tree was brought to Canada in the 1970's when the original owner immigrated from Japan to Canada. Needless to say, I'm pretty upset about it. Luckily insurance is willing to help me out. While the tree is irreplaceable to me, I do need to determine a value to attach to it. If anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction that would be great.

Luckily 80 percent of my bonsai survived, this one was just the hardest to lose.

I wonder if the insurance company would accept a an estimate from a stranger on a forum? Apart from that, it's pretty hard to make any guess based on a 2D photo. Is there a bonsai nursery in your neighbourhood that can have a look at it?

A bit unfortunate that it's more styled like a topiary than a bonsai.

They aren't going to take the word of a forum, just looking for a place to start. Unfortunately there are no bonsai nurseries within 3 hours of me, otherwise I would be asking them.

I was hoping that this forum would be helpful, so if we could keep things positive rather than criticizing and nit picking the style of the tree or my decision to ask for help here, that would be appreciated.

Giving the advice to have a person look at the real thing, rather than at one single picture from which we cannot even determinte the size is a helpful advice.

so if we could keep things positive rather than criticizing and nit picking the style of the tree or my decision to ask for help here, that would be appreciated.

You asked for the value. A properly styled bonsai has a higher value.

Yeah, I understand it's hard to put a price o something you can't see in person.

It is 20 inches high and 4.5 inches at the base of the trunk (thickness not circumference).

I appreciate the help.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Auk makes a valid point however, and I am afraid you will not like it. But.. considering this is not a proper bonsai styling, I would estimate it as any other stock tree needing work to get a properly layed out crown, I would place it at the same value as a stock tree. I recently bought a juniper of similar dimensions for 100E, so about 110 USD. Yours has a bit more going for it, as mine need the foliage put back. I would personally not buy it, but if then I would say 150-200 USD range

Insurance will be different in different countries, but here homeowners will cover standard things that "everybody" has, like clothes, kitchen stuff, etc. Diamonds and musical instruments have to be on a separate policy, with appraisals by people with some kind of authority. After the fact appraisals are pretty much worthless. Your jurisdiction may vary.

That's about the amount I had in mind, but didn't post yet as I thought I was being cheap :) . However, that's what we might be willing to pay for it. The shop price will be much higher. Depending on the shop, some of them asking insane amounts for what they label 'bonsai', that may be between 300 - 600,00 (or, for certain shops, even more).

Well designed, looking like a real bonsai, creating the image of an old tree, that has struggled against the elements, rather than having the pompom style foliage, the value would be higher.
