Hi
I was given a 8yo Chinese Elm for Christmas and I’ve noticed this growing on the soil, Although my 名媛直播 is thriving as I see several new branches growing, I’m concerned what might be mould or algie growing on top of the soil.
My bonsai is watered every 3-5 days depending on the dryness of the the soil with about 100-150ml of water, last watered on 7th Feb 2019, left on a windowsill in direct sunlight in the day and moved to a table in a corner of a room at night. Fertiliser is not due to be added until the end of February.
Can anyone give me any advice on what I may be doing wrong or if I’m just being paranoid?
Thanks in advance

These are acculumation of calcium carbonates, scale. They cause an ever increasing PH, so your soil becomes more alkaline, eventually hampering nutrient uptake and growth.
They are cause by hard water used. Switch to rain water. Having a more open substrate also helps, assuming you then water untill it drains at the bottom. Having the plant ouside in natures shower is the way I forego most of it.
