Chinese Elm is a hardy species. Whilst it may survive in a house environment it will not do as well as if it is a natural environment where has sunshine and humidity which is almost non existent in a house. There is also a variance in temperature which all species need to thrive. I have Chinese Elms which are outside and we had -10C last winter. Pot frozen, no problem. If you want a plant to keep inside then try a Ficus which will tolerate alien conditions.
