New to bonsai's and could use some advice/assistance. was created by Devong

Hello everyone, I am new too the forum and the world on bonsai's. I have been doing some research trying to decide one which species to get as my first. Just some background information. I go to school up north where temperatures range between -10 to -30 regularly so an outside tree will not suffice as it is just too cold and I do not have access to a proper area where the tree could remain safe. With that being said, I am trying to gauge which would be best as an indoor plant for at university. I can maintain any temperature needed as I control the thermostat in my room and am willing to get a humidifier tray and humidifier to create a more realistic environment to its natural environment. I get about 6-8 hours of direct sun light through my window and if that isn't enough I have no problem purchasing a light source providing the tree you guys suggest needs it. I am just trying to get an idea of which tree's whether it be a ficus or jade etc would be the most appropriate tree for a beginner. I plan to continue to do much more research as I hope to take this up as a hobby since its something I have had interest in for over a year now, yet I am still very much a beginner with no real experience and would love any information you guys could share! Thanks in advance, it is much appreciated.
Best Regards,
Devon Gauthier

The experience of most bonsai growers on this forum is that bonsai should be raised in their natural environment and that's outdoors.
I'm sure there are trees living in your area - so you should be able to find a species that does well and that can be used for bonsai.
You can try a ficus and grow it indoors, but it will never become a really good bonsai.
A Jade tree is an option, but they are not that suitable for bonsai and creating a convincing tree, growing it indoors, is hardly possible.

It is not an easy surrounding to grow bonsai. In order to create good (!) bonsai, you will need loads of sunlight.
Do a search on this site. There is an overview of where to find bonsai clubs. Go visit one in your region and as what they grow outside (Although I understand you do not have a good place to put tham at the moment?).
Species that may work are plants like chinese elm, ficus (Be carefull for the mallsai trap for both of these). Brazilian Raintree also does surprisingly well so far indoors in my windowsill but I doubt you can find one. serissa, chinese pepper and other tropicals that are often sold as indoors bonsai are really a rip off, and 99% of the time die within 3 months because they are hard to keep, and cannot deal with our indoors dry air.
