thatisandwas wrote: MY GOD. I came to this forum as i'm interested in the hobby and wanted to see what new users were asking about, hoping to see (as i have in so many other hobbies) seasoned vets helping out the new guy. Instead, i see a bunch of incredibly stuck up responses (minus a couple) about how THATS NOT A REEEAL BONSAI and basically making the guy feel dumb. What a shame. Why not tell him this is a good starter tree to learn the basics with? And yeah, BON SAI literally means "tree in small pot" so yeah, by definition, he has a bonsai. Whether or not it's up to your community's standards is certainly debatable but just because you don't like it doesn't make it so.
Sad really.
Great first post. Especially considering the detailed information and help given in this thread.
Go spend a bit more time reading up on bonsai and you will also realize there is more to it than just a plant in a pot. treespecies in a pot does not make it a bonsai.

"Yeah... but no. If you have read this forum, you'll know what the reply will be: that's not a bonsai but a mallsai. A cheap version, intended to look like a bonsai, but not really a bonsai. I understand your girlfriend meant well, but this really is not what this forum is about."
It comes off as incredibly stuck up and is not helpful at all.
产辞苍·蝉补颈
/产?苍?蝉ī,?产?苍?蝉ī/厂耻产尘颈迟
noun
noun: bonsai tree
an ornamental tree or shrub grown in a pot and artificially prevented from reaching its normal size.
the art of growing ornamental, artificially dwarfed trees or shrubs.
Again, whether or not the tree is up to a veterans standards or not does not define it as bonsai or not. The mass produced artwork in Ikea that was referenced earlier is STILL ARTWORK, it's just cheap, mass produced artwork. Perhaps someone who wants to get in to collecting cars would start with an older/cheaper model before they spend 10 years and tons of money rebuilding a classic? If someone is in to fashion as a hobby, do they have to buy one off produced clothing pieces for them to be "real" fashion lovers, or does dressing nice from cheap stuff at consignment stores not count???
I'm not going to argue that the tree he posted is better or even equivalent to some of the trees I've seen on this forum, but its perfectly fine as a starter tree to learn the ropes, and whether you like it or not, by definition, it IS A BONSAI. Why not tell the guy it's a fine tree to learn on and that if he can take good care of it and maybe learn some basic training techniques on it then perhaps it may be a great hobby for him? Instead, you basically insult the guy, tell him his bonsai is fake, and push him away in every way but physically. It's just absurd. It may be a mass produced, cheap bonsai...But again, its a 名媛直播. You can call it a "mallsai" and take cheap shots at the guy and his girlfriend all you want, but believe me when i say it comes off as incredibly rude and self serving.
It's no wonder this hobby has never exploded in popularity despite the obvious appeal if people like you are the first ones someone runs in to when they go looking for information and are excited about their first tree.
I've been growing for 20 years, but have never felt the need to post on this forum until i saw someone being insulted for literally no reason.

Sigh. The misconception between a definition of a word, and the meaning behind a word. 名媛直播 is more than just a tree in a pot. Is a bonsai a shrub or tree kept small in a pot? yes. Is therefor every small tree in a pot a bonsai? No.
Let's go with the everlasting fish example. If you want to keep Koi, you can look for a definition of Koi:
koi [koi] noun any of various colorful cultivated forms of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio, apparently originating in Japan and other parts of eastern temperate Asia.
So.. here you go: My koi:

I hope this examplifies why I say, a bonsai is more than just a tree in a pot. Which is also why I wrote these posts:
And ..
It's no wonder this hobby has never exploded in popularity despite the obvious appeal if people like you are the first ones someone runs in to when they go looking for information and are excited about their first tree.
I thank you very much for this. I would personally say I have been reasonably helpfull on this forum and even in this thread. I see absolutely no reason for your conclusion here.
