Hello, it's nice to meet you all! I got inspired by some videos on Youtube that I watched and decided to get a tree for my own. But I didn't want my first tree as a very expensive one and complicated to care for, so I went to the local home and garden shop and got this:

Attachment not found

So I'd like to first know what kind of tree it is (didn't say in the shop) and how to care for it properly. I assume this is the ficus microcarpa, is that right? Also any suggestions on possible design?

I myself was thinking of shortening the downwards facing branch to see if it can grow lighter towards the end, start bending the apex back upwards and towards the centre and removing the third branch on the bottom (or maybe I should bend it a bit to the direction against downwards branch.)

Anyway, I'll be happy to see your suggestion, thank you for your attention.

I would let the plant alone for a couple of week just to see it is healthy. If they looks fine then, I will defoliate to induce new buds to grow for ramification. But I will only do this if it is really ficus. They withstand a good level of abuse.

I will let the branch undisturbed as it can help in trunk thickening (I don't know if there are sufficient length of trunk buried). If there is immediate root ball below the joint, I will ask further idea.

*I will let most of my plant grow alone for few months while learning about it and be ready to make any work on it. Keeping it alive under my care will be my priority.

Hey Russel, and welcome to the forum.

First lesson to learn. First find out which species it is. It dictates everything, from whether you can keep this outside, whether it will survive indoors, what you can do to it, and what it needs in light and water. At the moment, you just have a green shrub, without any care information.

What you have here is a very young plant, which could be seen as a starter to grow a bonsai out of. Do realize that this will take a lot of time, and skill. 名媛直播 is a marathon, and not a sprint. So go slow. Don't take rash decisions. Trees in pots are easy t kill. I have a hard time identifying it. Both because I do not have any plant resembling this. And secondlly because I have no clue where you bought it., It could be a satsuki azalea. Check some images, and perhaps you can post a well-focussed, non-blurred closelup of a branch with leaves. Important that we can see both the foliage, as the branch, the way they connnect, and the underside of the leaves. (Although I am sure that people who have this specis get a very near-certain idea already from what you posted). It is certainly not a ficus.

Summary: DO not take rash actions, but focus on keeping it alive first. Step one is making sure you know the species. The earlier advice given about defoliating, I would not follow. Not all species are suitable for it.

First find out what species you have. If needed, return to the store and ask them.If they cannot tell you ,then never go back to that store for bonsai. If they have no clue as to what they are /selling, how can they ensure they sell you something healthy, and give you advice on how to care for it?

Yup. I totally agree with this. :)

I still in the phase of experimenting and that is what I will do with my ficus, if it is ficus. I am not really sure Russel's plant.
