Hi everyone, good day!

I bought a mallsai ficus ginseng last month and after learning about mallsai & bonsai, and also the beauty of bonsai art, I decided to make this mallsai a specimen for experiment/learning.

I am thinking about separating all of three thick roots (or trunks, please guide me). Let say there are A, B and C individual thick roots at the base. My plan is to cut the roots and lets A attached to the main trunk. For B & C root I want to try to plant it and let new shoots grow so I can have three different plants. All of it have their own finer root section. What is the probability of growing the shoots out of these cut thick roots?

Another question, I made air layering section at the branch that I think I don't really need. This branch is around 5mm diameter. Considering the procedure is made correctly, will this size successfully rooted using air layering technique? Its been 2 weeks and the branch foliage looks healthy until now.

I peek inside the foil wrap noticed a strong white fat root showed up penetrating plastic wrap inside. I got the answer for the 2nd question. I will update with pictures after few days just not to disturb it too much. :)

The root of layering section. This take less than 3 weeks. I did frequent check of the substrate inside to make sure it will never be completely dry and inject water when needed. For the whole plant watering I let the top soil dry to the touch before watering, and misting as frequent as I can to regulate humidity and inducing aerial roots. I put the plant under my car porch area, but while checking the substrate and root growth I will avoid harsh light.

Nice, I had one of those ficuses and I just cut the whole part right where the 3 roots merged. I put the top in some akadama/bims and few weeks later new roots emerged and now I've got a new tree with a nice base.

I made a blog posts about it if you're interested:

Hey Fonz, welcome!
You haven't mentioned the results from the cutting, did it take after all?

Hey Clicio, good to see you here too :)

They both took. Roots are coming out of the bottom of both pots. I pruned them both back even more to get rif of the long straight branches. New growth is coming along nicely.

Just took this crappy pic on my desk. The grass sprouted from the sphagnum moss :)

I read Fonz's blog and I am gonna change my first plan. If I keep one root all the way to the top it will resulted as a plant with two different foliage type. I am thinking about separating all the roots as per earlier plan on the first post and cut the grafted section to make the 4th new plant
