EMERGENCY blackthorn yamadori was created by jacobplopo

today, in my university, in the northwest uk, i found that someone had gotten planning permission to build a greenhouse, and subsequently was going to destroy a load of blackthorn (sloe). I had to leave and go home, so with all my might, i pulled one up from the ground. The fattest i could find...

it is in the boot of my car with a plastic bag wrapped around the little roots it had left. not a bad amount i dont think, but it lost the majority of its tap roots, but still has some hairy ones around the base of the trunk, and on what is left of the tap roots.

I was wondering, will i be able to save this? Do i cut the tree back short so it doesn't lose water through its few leaves? Bearing in mind that it is autumn. Or, do i just pot it up and leave it? i've got some multipurpose compost at my disposal but thats it. i could also dig it into the flowerbeds this weekend.

I will try and provide pics of the remaining root system later on, and the whole tree but no guarantees.

Thanks for any help and advice in advance. Especially prompt.

If it still had leaves it might be a problem, but just pot it up I would prune it quite hard and then leave it for the winter in a sheltered spot if you can. Soak it and then just keep it ,moist during the winter, If it has leaves I would remove them.

Look at the website yamadri4me. This is the site of Tony Tickly. He collects lots of blackthorn every year, and he has a post on how he treats them after collection.

I think it will involved a heating bed, and a large plastic bag. But your timing is really poor for such an action.

I tried that address with .com and also yamadori4me but couldn't find anything. I am heading into a major yamadori exercise this winter and would really like some real data.

Good stuff. It is.

However, a few questions, which maybe I should address to him.

It won't be hot here for a long time (at least what we call hot). I will be digging stuff up over the course of the next several months. Would I just put them in a pot, and let the sun shine when it wants to? Would it be better to get them out of the ground in the spring?

It is way better to get them out at the right time. Early spring as buds begin to swell & the first indications of green are around is the optimal time for most deciduous species.

That should be doable. I have found four trees and cut them off to about a foot or so. There is another acre to clear, and I'll see what I find back there. March will be fun.

Removing leaves on collected tree in autumn isn?t good for it as I understand from what Harry Harrington teaches. You need as many roots and leaves as possible. Using black bag sweating technique in autumn when the tree is entering dormancy doesn?t make sense to me too.
"Collected" blackthorn that have been basically pulled out of the ground won?t stand a chance I think. Even properly collected trees need a special care and conditions to make it.
Good luck with your tree though.
