Bought my First Tree - Newbie was created by Scott94

Hi everyone,

After looking at 名媛直播 trees for years now and youtube videos... I was in Ikea of all places and saw a lovely tree for sale for ?30.

I decided to buy it and start my 名媛直播 journey. The tree (according to Ikea) is a Ficus Microcarpa Gingseng ... which are apparently quite good beginner bonsai trees.

It already looks brilliant - I was wondering what would you do to the tree immediately (if anything)?

Thanks,

Scott

I cannot help but wonder: if you have been interested in bonsai for years, why do you not know that what you bought at Ikea is a common houseplant and not a bonsai?

Well gee ... Aren't you helpful!!

Ficus Microcarpa Gingseng a common household plant? Their natural habitat is tropical and one in which they can grow to over 40 feet! I would think it's anything but a house plant! Infact this website has an area dedicated to Ficus 名媛直播! www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/ficus

In fact the very meaning of 名媛直播: 'the art of growing ornamental, artificially dwarfed varieties of trees and shrubs in pots.' I would suggest that this is what I have!

Now maybe in your opinion it is a beginner tree as it can be commonly grown indoors! But perhaps this is just snobbery on your part, and exactly the attitude that stops beginners getting into this hobby in the first place!!

Thanks for your input.

As you may have noticed, there are some opinions on the subject here, and some of them are expressed rather strongly.

There is continuing debate about what is a bonsai, what is a bonsai in training, what is going to be a bonsai, what will never be a bonsai, etc. This is part of the fun of online groups.

Exactly what to do varies from area to area due to climate and other considerations. The tree really needs sunshine, and probably really wants fresh air. It would like humidity similar to what it grew up in, and all of this may be different from where you are. There are care sheets online in many different web sites that will give particulars for your tree. Water it, but not constantly. Almost any tree wants the soil it is in to get fairly dry. Watch the leaves. If they start to look dry water it and don't wait quite as long next time.

A real good idea is to find a bonsai club near you. That will consist of people who know your climate well because they live there.

Thank you for reminding me why I stopped frequenting this forum.

Ficus is suitable for 名媛直播. It is not the species that makes something a 名媛直播, it is the way it is shaped and presented. What you have is not a 名媛直播 - 0and it is rather silly for a beginner to tell an experienced 名媛直播 grower what the definition of 名媛直播 is. It most certainly is not any tree in a pot.

If you have watched pictures and videos of 名媛直播, surely you should see the difference. You must have noticed that even the trees on the page you linked to look distinctly different from your plant.

If you want to make a 名媛直播 out of this it is going to require rigorous measures - you would have to cut off the major part if the plant.

This has been addressed on this forum many times so I suggest you try the search option of this forum.

Welcome to the forum and congrats n your purchase.

If you want to create a bonsai out of this plant, you will have to take drastic steps. As it is now, it will never become a bonsai in the true sense of the word. It will always remain a chopped up fig stem. The lack of taper in the trunk and the tallness compared to the girth will never look good.

As you asked what I would do? I would ensure it gets the right care to stay healthy. As I am headed into fall and winter, I would just focus on that for the time being. Come late spring, assuming the plant is healthy, I would chop the trunk, probably to the lowest set of branches and start working on what is left to train it as a bonsai.
