My potentilla has spots in the trunk that are rotting. Is there a way to stop this? Should I clean the rotted parts out?

Should have taken a video, maybe. I think it's rot. When I probed lightly the wood was soft and "sawdust" came out. Once I remove the rot, should I apply something? Lime sulphur?

This is one problem of potentilla. The deadwood over time decays. Even if you remove the rotting part. Keep it dry. Treat it with wood hardener.. Then, over time it will just fall apart. It is not a very stable wood I am afraid.

But yeah, clean away the spungy part. Treat with lime sulfer. Let it dry. Treat with wood hardener.

LB, Felidae in another thread suggested Superglue, and I've been reading some people using it as wood preserver with success.
Have you tried it yet?

Thank you for the info. Did not know that about potentilla. Any suggestions what to use as wood hardener?

Superglue will not reallly impregnate the wood, I think?

I have used a product that carpenters use when windsills get rotted. The remove the rotting stuff, and impregnate the wood with this: before making further repairs. Note, it is only a short reprieve. Behind the hardener the rot cal still continue.

What about epoxy, thinned with ethanol? On theory it soaks into the rotten and dry parts, and makes a layer impermeable. Further work on the deadwood must be different tho.. ?

I think it does, It’s an acrylate. I’m not sure neither, but I try to run a test as soon as Ill have time..
