New to 名媛直播 - Some guidance would be greatly appreciated! was created by epiclace

Hello Everyone!
After years of being curious about 名媛直播, I finally jumped in the deep end and purchased my first 名媛直播 a little under a week ago. I have done extended reading and research on how to care / style / grow a bonsai, but it seems the more I read, the less I know! I purchased this Japanese Maple with the intention of re-potting and wiring / shaping in early spring. Now I am not so sure it's ready for this!
- From bottom of the trunk / top of the soil it's 28cm / 12 inch tall
- I can see very fine roots sprouting above the soil and starting to come out the bottom of the pot - these are dark brown in colour
- I live in the Southern Hemisphere and we are 2/3 of the way through our winter so it's currently dormant
- We have several Japanese Maple's growing in our front yard so I have high hopes it will do well (I am keeping it in a place where it gets plenty of natural light and partial shade. I am also ensuring the soil stays nice and damp).
Now my questions are:
Should I re-pot in the early spring or wait another year for the trunk to thicken? I would prefer for it to have a thicker trunk and I am not sure if this comes with time, or because it needs to spend time growing out its roots in the first few years in larger pots?
Am I able to wire and style the branches? The trunk and thicker branches are very stiff and I am concerned if I don't add any movement now, I will miss this opportunity / be too difficult to wire as it ages.
When I purchased it, they told me it had already been pruned, but I am very concerned about the dead branches - can these be removed any time? Is this a sign my plant is not in good condition? And if I do re-pot early Spring, would it stress the 名媛直播 too much if I also pruned and or wired?
Thank you in advance! Seems like a friendly supportive community!

I would see this plant really as a plant which needs all the work still done. Roots and trunk are what you should focus on for now. The trimming was done poorly, and certainly not with bonsai in mind.
If it were mine, I would repot it in a flat container, much wider than deep. Do te repotting as you get the buds swelling and the first buds opening (JUST have a tiny bud opening). During repot, focus on carefully detangling the roots, and spreading them our in the box, each root in its own space. In summer do a proper trim-back eeping the best trunkline and as little of the repeated cuts as possible. Keep in mind that young maples only grow buds on the places where leaves were, and not in between on the trunk.

Thank you so much for your advice and feedback. It's incredibly helpful. Being so new to 名媛直播 makes it very daunting to know where to start.

In the end, it is not all that tricky, once you have a few basic concepts in your mind. In the end, even the most impressive expert started as a novice.epiclace wrote: Thank you so much for your advice and feedback. It's incredibly helpful.
