Absolute beginner with almost dead bonsai was created by eSorin

Hi, I bought a bonsai this past winter while buying some flowers for a birthday, it looked really peaceful tho it had no leaves. I decided to buy it and asked the ladies in the shop how to take care of it. They weren't too descriptive, telling me that I shouldn't move it too often, not let the soil go dry and talk to it.
Things went well, got him home, the leaves started showing up tho it was still winter outside, but warm inside the house. They grew in a weird fashion, the branches started extending a lot (I think it was too far away from the window) and leaves grew sporadically.

This went on until like two weeks ago when the leaves started falling. This happened after I had a couple of days of watering it with tap water and not bottled water. In retrospect I think this also coincided with when I had to leave home for like 4 days and I put a lot of water in the dish beneath the bonsai pot.
My reaction was to switch back to bottled water ASAP and water it more often because I thought I neglected it while I was away (again, in retrospect I know that was really dumb).
Some more days went on, I read that over watering is most probably the issue and I let it for a couple of days without watering it. I thought ok, it's dying, I'll go to a bonsai place in town and ask for help and better caring instructions.
After not watering it for a couple of days and leaves continuing to fall except for precisely one leaf, it would appear that other leaves are starting to grow, small but really green!

I was so sure that I killed another plant that when seeing this i decided to come here and ask for help in identifying it and giving it better care.
I starting checking the surface soil to see if it is really dry and guess what, saw some kind of tiny snails? two of them, guess they surfaced because of the lack of humidity. Crushed one because I thought it was just the shell and it appears it was alive. Don't know where they came, must be from the flower shop where I got the bonsai.
So, could you guys please help me with some tips where I went wrong, what to do next and ID this bonsai?

I'm sorry I was so bad to the bonsai, I really cared for it but I guess lacking proper information on what it needs made me mistreat it badly.

It looks like a dying chinese elm mallsai.
Pray, water properly, plenty of natural light, in the shade, wait.

Hm.. Typical mass produced 'made to die' mallsai.

What is under the moss?

I would probably..
- Remove all the mess around the tree (moss etc). Then try to lift it from the pot without distubing. (Check whether the rock is fixed to the pot or just stuck in there). Then repot in a pot without the rock, using a good quality potting soil. Do not disturb the roots anymore than absolutely needed. If you have a garden, plant it in the garden, in full ground. Put it in a spot where it gets a few hours of sunlight in the early morning. Without leaves, try to avoid anything but the early morning sun. and then just leave it alone. Just water when it starts to get dry.
