help - newbie pruner - any hope for this guy? was created by shaunpi

Hi - I'm trying to help this little ficus tree. I've seen him over the years not get pruned and his long trunk just kept growing outward as his nice cover of leaves over the main trunk just died off over time. I was wondering if I can bring him back to a nice bonsai looking tree by perhaps cutting at points 1, 2, or 3 that I labeled in the picture. Of course since I don't know anything about anything, I figured it'd be better to ask for advice before I attempted anything as I dont want to kill the tree. Any thoughts or advice on what I could do (if anything) to get him potentially pruned to look more like a bonsai tree should is much appreciated.

thank you in advance fr any tips/thoughts/advice,
shaun

True, some hard extreme trunk chopping might be required. Maybe this link would help you understand:

Side notes:

  • This tree is not a Ficus, so it growing pattern would be different (Ficus are strong and fast growers).
  • In order to perform procedures like these some previous experience is highly desired. So, if you are decided to go for it, it might help your cause and success rate to get someone experienced to help you out.
  • It is desirable that the tree is healthy before running extreme procedures over him.
