Winter care of Japanese red maple bonsai was created by fishlover

Hi.
I am new to bonsai. I bought 2 tiny Japanese Maple from a local green house. One red and one green. The plants are about 8" tall from the soil. Leafs spread out about 6" in diameter. The store owner told me it is a bonsai imported from Asia. I went on internet to find information I need. I realized it needs to be winterized so the plants realize what season it is in order to change color on its leafs.
I am up north in Canada with a hard cold zone 3 winter; The store owner told me to leave them outdoor for spring, summer and fall but move it into a unheated (not frozen) garage before the first frost. My first question is if I leave it in the garage, it will be in total darkness most of the time. Will they survive through the 6 months time in the garage?
I am kind of expecting leafs on the green one will turn red in the fall.... Is it a reasonable expectation?
Also, what can I expect the red one will turn into when season changes?
Attached is picture of both plants.
Advise is much appreciated!

I doubt very much they will survive six months of Canadian winter inside a unheated, unlighted garage.
OK, maples are hardy, but... More than 4 months is a loooooong winter.
But you know, I live in Brazil, some say Maples do not survive our heat, but fortunately yes, they do.
So...

Dormancy in winter means the plant runs on very low energy levels. If you store it for winter you have to make sure it does nto dry out completely because it does need water. The darkness is not an issue, as the plant will not have leaves. Do make sure you keep it at very low temperatures. I would personally try to keep it as near to freezin as possible. But certainly below the 6-7 degrees C to ensure the plant stays dormant.
