Has my elm entered the realm of 名媛直播 heaven? was created by J4

Greetings all,

So, we had our garden re-done August of last year (2017) which had an elm that needed moving. It was a bonsai initially but was left out and ended up growing into the ground by the fence. Was there for quite a few years I believe.

When the builders came they dug it up for us to re-pot but I have a feeling they left quite a few big roots behind. I potted it with some soil and earth which it was in (1st image) and misted the leaves almost every day for a few months like it was my own child, and kept it in a sheltered spot. Over the winter it started losing leaves and then by late winter they had all dropped. Light watering of the soil also happened maybe once or twice a week unless it was damp. When the temperatures dropped below 0/-1?c I put it in the shed to stop it from frosting too much. Whether that was good or bad I don't know.

Now in Spring I was hoping the warmth may have given it a boost but no buds are to be seen. Is it still working on its roots or am I at an end? Was really looking forward to working with it as the trunk shape is so nice. Thinking of a windswept or a cascade look eventually.

I cut the bark on the upper section (attached) of the thicker branch if it gives any more indication of its cambium layer.

Any questions and I'll try to cast my mind back!

That is a bit odd.
The cut suggests there is plenty of live material left. I would say.. Keep it evenly moist, half-sunny (Early morning/later afternoon sun). And wait. There really is not much mor eyou can do. Some plants take months to start growing if they are unhappy.

Ok, thanks. Is there any chance of the potting medium being too dense do you think?

I would wait. It looks alive and well.

Yes, it looks very organic, but if the tree was well growing in this soil, this shouldn't be the reason it is not budding now.

Sounds positive then. Shall I look to repot into a suitable mix next year and keep tending to it until then? As I feel the soil I added to the earth at the time is not really suitable.

Should probably mention I'm in the UK (south) for anyone wondering with temps etc.

Yes, repot it in the Spring with good bonsai mix.

I'm just thinking, shall I feed it with a small amount of all purpose plant food this season?

Also, are small spiders ok on it (like money spiders)? There're 2 or 3 who have set up camp on it.

Only fertilize if you have good growth. Else you will help it on the road down.
Spiders are part of life and plants have learned to live with spider on them. They are not cared of them. If they are spider mites (Which woul dmake a mess of your plant covering them with silk and are the size of a grain of salt) it is a different story.
