Worried about using air conditioning. Help Please? was created by Badger

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to introduce myself. I'm relatively new to 名媛直播 and I live in Boston. We can get some COLD winters here and although it's spring time now, I'm already worried about the Winter. My question is, will an air conditioner in a room with 名媛直播 Trees kill them? I have 2 south/west facing windows and I'm going to lose one in winter due to the air conditioner unit. (see attached photo). I have 2 GrowSpot florescent lights that I use for supplemental light on overcast days as well as to extend the light longer into the evening. Will running an AC unit help or hurt my plants on hot Boston days with the windows closed? The right window will be where the AC unit goes. The photo looks like there is no light but it's just overcast today. Usually gets A LOT of light. Also does anyone have any ideas on maximizing the space in front of 1 window? I have 9 名媛直播 trees-Tropical and Sub-tropical(most not shown in photo)and 2 additional succulents. This is our bedroom and my wife has been kind enough to let me set up the trees here so I can't go crazy with lighting. The rack in front of the left window isn't the greatest but it works ok. The shelf space is small because of the shelf above each shelf. Unfortunately not adjustable.
Thank you in advance for offering your valuable time to answer my questions.
Sincerely,
Badger

In the long run you are not going to get the health in your trees needed to grow bonsai. Get species that are local to your climate, and grow your trees outside.

Unfortunately that's not an option. I live in Boston. I'm looking for help with the current conditions I have. Of course I'd love to grow outdoors. ::)
Thanks!

Not sure what living in boston has to do with it, but well.

Airconditioners are bad for your trees. They dry out the air. Plants do not like dry air.

Living in Boston means you don't have outdoor space. I live in the City- Concrete jungle if you know what I mean. So then maybe getting a humidifier might be good advice if running an air conditioner?

Hey Badger,
I’m also an Urban Gardener do to the current conditions.
AC is bad for you as for your plants, just they cannot do against. Didn’t tried with trees yet, but with many other plant and living being, I use an air purifier/humidifier with ice cold water in the tank, when it’s too hot in the room . When I was young, I kept cool my animals with frozen water bottles, front of a fan.

As leatherback said, probably you cannot get the full potential or health without proper technique just inside.

As light in planted terrariums, I started to use 6500 Kelvin as color temperature, which is around the natural sunlight’s value. If you can find a bulb/tube/led with PAR parameters, try to get a 600-700nm. Lumen is depends the area which you wan’t to lighten.
It should be adaptable for trees also, but I think strictly tropicals/subtropicals.

I bought 2 gro spot florescents and will use a humidifier when I absolutely need AC. My south facing windows help as well. They get direct sun through the screens and with using a good fertilizer once every 2 weeks my plants have been thriving!! 1.5 months so far and so much new growth. All indoors!!

Write down the climate in the house season by season, particularly by that window. Look at temperature, humidity, and daylight hours. Then find some area in the world with similar climate and get trees from there. There are a number of tropical mail order houses, but most of their plants will probably want humidity.

Or, build a platform on a South facing window, much like the platform a window AC unit sits on, and get local trees, as several here have mentioned. You then have a problem to solve with harsh winter months, but that should not be real hard. Trees expect a certain climate pattern and won't do well without it.

Thank you very much. I did exactly that. 1, got trees that can survive in "My" climate and 2, got a shelf system that fits perfectly at window level(south facing). and....I can even adjust the shelf slightly higher and slightly lower so I can fine tune for best sun if needed :) For winter, I will plug the window where it may be drafty and make sure heat isn't high(ideally 68-75 degrees). Will get fans and make sure they get fresh air too.
See all you peeps that say you can't grow indoors! You actually can and very nicely to boot! You just have to mimic the weather as best as possible. Will they be better then trees grown outside in full bright sunlight? Probably not but pretty darn close! Indoors is also cleaner so pests and natural dangers are at a minimum if at all.
Thanks Everyone!!! Greatly appreciated. I'll post in another 2 months so you can see the progress.
Cheers,
Austin

I hope it works out for you. Unfortunately, 99% of those who try to grow bonsai strictly indoors run into mayor health issues with their trees.
I would love to see what things look like mid-summer next year.
