Hi I need some tree ID help and a suggestion of soil to use to re-pot. I think I have a Japanese holly on my hands but wanted to confirm.
If it is a holly, what is a good soil to use, would something like this be good?
thanks in advance

Hello,
Your young tree is not a bonsai yet.
My suggestion is: use the tool in this website to identify your plant:
www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/bonsai-identification
Any "bonsai soil" (free draining mostly inorganic soil) will be better than the soil it came in.
BTW, the rocks can be safely put away from your pot. They add weight, but nothing else.

It's a young plant, and it has a long way to go to become an Ilex Crenata 名媛直播 (Japanese Holly 名媛直播).Hawke84 wrote: why do you say its not a 名媛直播 yet? I bought him as one
Take a look at the picture below:

Yes, they do.Hawke84 wrote: The rocks look cool
But they can make it difficult to water properly, and in your current nursery soil, they can compact the soil even more.
The picture above has moss and a rock. It looks cool. But the soil is free draining.
Not like yours.

That tree looks amazing!
Is it ok to report then? I put him in that soil last year the the roots haven't really filled it out yet.

Usually it's OK to repot in the beginning of the Spring, if the tree is healthy and temperatures not freezing.

Long ago I read an article about styling bonsais. The author said he had never heard anyone say, "Why doesn't that bonsai have a rock?" Some trees look better with the rock but most rocks are just a distraction.
I have remembered that advice.
