Has my bonsai died? was created by MCVG

Hello, my bonsai is 6 months old. It has been doing really really well but two weeks ago it started to look like it was getting dry. To prevent it from dying I have watered it by sumerging it in water (as explained in the blog) and I bought a drip in the garden centre. 1 week later the result is not very good. I have posted a photo to ask for advice.
The bonsai was pruned in January, it has been watered when I saw that it the soil wasn’t moist enough.
When I submerged the pot in water until it made bubbles, I found out that there were like tiny mites in the soil. Now, not sure if they are parasites or they are supposed to be there for a good reason.
Should I replant it? Should I use a fertiliser or a pesticide?
Thanks

Submerging in water with normal soil like this is very bad. It gets too wet and takes way too long to dry up again.
Since the pot is so wet, you should not water it anymore. Overwatering looks the same as Underwatering on the foliage.
I don't know much about the insects in your soil, maybe someone else can help on that, but I think aslong as you see no damage from them they should be rather harmless. If you want to be safe you should put some dishwashing liquid with water in a spray bottle and spray it down, this will kill the insects but is harmless to your tree. However I would wait till your soil is dry again.

In your case I would just repot it into proper soil, if you still have it in the soil that was there when you bought it. If you did repot it recently you should just wait for it to dry. Even when the surface looks dry you should make sure that the inside is as well. Trees don't need much water in colder months. You need to read up on bonsai soil in case you decide to repot. In short, it needs to be very aerated and be able to hold enough water at the same time. There is nearly always an option to get cheap alternatives to the expensive japanese bonsai soil. Just do some research on that. You should be able to get some kind of small porous stones, cat litter (not all kinds work) and bark very cheap and easily, as example.
