So, I have a young Acer japonicum that I've been growing from seedling for the last 2 years. It's still really skinny, and it doesn't have a lot of branches. I'm afraid I need to transplant it into a shallower pot because it keeps getting taller! Does anyone have any suggestions on root trimming? It's Late winter here on the west coast, and we just got the last of our cold weather. I was going to wait until year 3 before I begin wiring and such, but it's getting so tall.
Any suggestions are helpful!

Wait.
Don't prune the roots.
Don't wire or cut the branches.
Don't put it in a shallow por, otherwise it will never get thick.
Put it in a colander, a grow box or in the ground.
And wait.

Have a look here:

After reading that, I am sure you will have more questions, probably more pointed than what you posted now ;)
