Will my precious jade tree survive this root rot ? was created by So Arty

Ok, I have only had him for 4/5 months (given to me by a friend in July/Aug) he has lost 50% of his leaves and now that I have spent some time reading up on Jades and root rot he clearly has it! I definitely over watered and didn't place in the brightest of places. So at present, I have washed off the soil and I am waiting for him to dry. I have bought new well-draining soil for cactus and bonsais.
Question.....How far do I trim the roots back ? is there a chance he will make it?
Thank you in advance for any tips/comments.

Yes, there is a chance. But water it properly if it survives.

Which I'd say is water very little. When I had jade trees, I regularly didn't water them and let them dry out (I just forgot 'm.. I don't really do indoor bonsai).

Note.. you write jade. In one of the pictures I see a sign crassula, which would be jade.
But I am going out on a limb, and say this is portocularia Afra, and not Crassula Ovata. Different species. P. Afra is a lot ahrder to keep.
Cut the roots off beyond the rot. Let it dry very well. Pot it up. And only water very very little. These are not the easiest to keep, and in my eyes not very suitable for bonsai, altough some nice examples do exist.

Yes, Portucalaria Afra has smaller leaves and is not so easy to keep as bonsai.
They are sensitive regarding too much watering.
