Hi all.
I'm a beginner. I want to collect a couple of trees I've been looking at in the woods. A couple of oaks, some juniper, maybe a beech if I can find one small enough. It's my land, so no worries there. I dig a white pine each year as a Charlie Brown Christmas tree, then replant it after the holidays. We have so many of those that they're more like weeds than trees.
My question is, should I use a spade and cut around the trees now and collect them in the spring or should I wait and do it all at once? I'm thinking that the cutting around it will force some root growth and help later on.
Thanks
Dave

Yes I would suggest to push a spade down around the chosen tree and maybe pour some fertilizer around the tee as well. It could help grow roots near the surface, because that could be a problem when it comes to collecting trees.
I don't know where are you located, where I live it is a bit late to do this procedure.

Yeah, I was thinking I should do some prep work in 2018 and collect it in 2019. I'm near Boston, so anything I do to the roots now won't be good for the trees.
Thanks for the response.
