Chinese elm dried leaves help?!?! was created by Khesp18

I got this little. Chinese elm at the beginning of August. I have carefully maintained proper water (with the exception of it drying out once in the beginning, I now use the chop stick method to check water) it receives fertilizer on a regular schedule and gets plenty of light. When I first brought this plant home, I noticed it was extremely root bound. Being late in the season I turned to this site for advise on reporting. I was advised to just try to keep it alive and forget repotting. The little tree now has all of its leaves completely dry and they will fall off to the touch. I checked the trunk and the tree is alive. The leaves also did not turn yellow or develop spots so it is not mould. I worry that this tree is not going to survive if no action is taken soon. I did add some new bonsai soil to the top of the pot to cover over exposed roots today but do not know what else I can do to help this little guy out. Please advise.

Pictures?
Dried leaves indicate a very fast drying out. You did not bring it into a heated space did you?
