I have a Japanese maple and a Lemon. The Japaneses Maple is kind of special to me, as it came from my grandpas that passed away in 2015. This is his tree...

Anyway, the property was sold to a developer and they completely leveled the the 20 acres to build 32 homes on it, so far they have left the maple tree in his front yard alone, i'm hoping they are going to keep it, as a reminder of my grandpa. He planted it in in 1967 and cared for that tree from then to 91 years old.




This year, the little maple that i got from his tree has been through all kind of hell, one morning i woke up all the leaves were ate off by a critter, and when i was gone for about 6 weeks, my brother had given it miracle grow when he was watering his plants, and now there is brown spots all over it... They are not getting any worse, and i don't no if that caused it but i would hate for it to die. I don't want to sit it out permanently in case i one day decide to move, but i'm scared to try my hand at bonsai because i don't want to kill it, so i think i will use this lemon to "practice" on since i have 3 cuttings from it.




So, when i pluk this lemon from the smart pot, what size pot would i want to use based on the size now i should transplant into?

To me this seems a question about how to grow trees - but it doesn't seem bonsai-related, really?
