Japanese maple help

I bought a small weeping Japanese maple this season and thought it would look good as a bonsai.It's on the bigger side but not much growth, or leaves yet.I don't think it will live over the winter outside in the shallow pot it is in,so I'm going to bring it inside.My question is should I bring it in while the leaves are still on it or after they drop.Also will it drop leaves still if it's inside and warm?Thanks for any help with this

No do not take it in. Put it in a sheltered spot and leave it, It will survive perfectly well put it undr a table or similar but do not allow it to dry out completely

Yes, the leaves will drop once the tree has died for being in the wrong environment.

Thanks.It's in a bowl type pot,maybe 4 inches deep.I figured it would freeze.I am in zone 5

It should be fine in zone 5. You may want to protect it but you do not want to bring it indoors. Look up your variety, its hardiness, and take into consideration that it is in a pot, not in the ground, which makes a difference.
