First 名媛直播 tree - Chinese elm? was created by Madfox

Greetings everybody!

Am all new to the forums and to the bonsai trees. Just yesterday got one for my birthday as I have been intrigued by these and never have seen them myself in stores here in Estonia.

After a bit of googling it looks like it should be Chinese elm - and if I am right then happy me gets one of the easiest trees first as I know nothing of caring about plants.

The trunk seems a bit weird and reminds me of just a normal apple tree and doesn't look like classical bonsai tree when one thinks of it - and it would be my goal to get it something similar, but I have no clue if it is possible or how one would try to do it. But all in all it seems quite healthy to me, so that's fantastic!

Am glad to read any helpful tips on how should I try to fix this one right up!

It is a chinese elm, and for a starter tree not too bad... the trunk does have kind of a strange bend on the one side.. you could consider letting it grow for a few years, so that you can work on the branches... most important is keeping the tree alive and thriving... sooner or later, if possible you might consider putting the tree outside, but winter is comming, and if it wasn't outside through the summer and fall, you might want to wait on putting it outside until next year.

So you think I should also not even consider pruning it and trying something fancy with wires and just let it grow wild for a year or two?

Right now change is in the air. Winter is coming. Leave the tree till spring. Just ensure that you can keep it alive. When spring comes, you can look at rootwork and/or branches.

I am not sure how cold it gets where you are. Look into winter temperatures. Keeping these indoors over winter is not always the best option.

If you had a space, that doesn't have really dry air over the winter, but where it doesn't get below freezing, you might consider that.... I know some chinese elms can handle -20, but if it was inside most or all of it's life, I would wait until next year at the least to leave it unprotected outside. As far as styling is concerned, leatherback is right. I would wait... you can only work on a tree that is growing well and healthy.

For two days the leaves have been falling off and now overnight quite a bunch of leaves got yellow.

Is it entering it's dormancy like all the other trees outside as it is autumn? Or am I doing something wrong (which I probably am too, but just wondering if the trees just adapt to the nature they are in and enter the dormancy like all the other trees.)

Also only place where I can put it outside is balcony which doesn't face the morning sun - so to get most of the sun I have it at the window, would it be better if I move it outside to get more air after the midday and then back inside for the night? I guess the real question is if it is a stupid idea to move it inside and outside again and again especially when it is going to be minus degrees outside in a week or two probably.

Really want to make this little beauty work as I have already noticed some branches and roots that could have potential :)
