Need help! Beginner identification and re-potting was created by Train101

Hello! I am a new member of this website, and unfortunately I need some help. I recently bought a "bonsai" tree from Walmart. It looks pretty sad but I have grown attached to the little guy:cheer: . I have heard that Walmart trees like this suffocate under the glued rocks they put in the pot. My questions are: What species of tree is this? And how do I properly care for it? I'm pretty sure I need to re-pot it, but is there anything I should know before I do that? (Note: I am college student living in a dorm, so growing outside isn't really an option for me)

I think this is your tree:

here is the bonsaiempire species guid: www.bonsaiempire.com/tree-species/carmona

I would first clean off the moss, which looks dead, and see if the stones are part of the soil or if they are attached with glue to the soil. if so, and they are not part of the soil, I would get rid of them as well... have a look at the position guidelines, as that may also be why your tree could be having problems. it needs lots of sun.

If these are recent pictures, I don't think it looks that bad... does it have new growth?

Thank you! I don't think it has any new growth. I will defiantly take a look at that. Those pictures are from yesterday, so yes they are fairly recent. I realy appreciate the help!

Okay so I removed the moss and top layer of rocks. It seems that only the top layer was glued and the rest are lose in the soil so I kept them. I just moved the plant to a window for more sun. Is there anything else I should do?

I guess it needs more light than this small window. Water it when the soil feels dryish to the touch. Keep it moist, not over wet.
Good luck with your tree!

I would look for the brightest window you have... repot in spring, with a more free draining soil, there are tips here on how much of which things...

this also is a good link:
