I do not fully agree. There is more to bonsai than a treespecies kept in a pot. The art side of it matters, and makes the difference between a tree in a pot and a bonsai. Not to say one cannot enjoy a tree in a pot. Biut it is not bonsai.

Yeah, it matters, just not to everyone. There's two types of people that join bonsai forums. Those that want to practice it as a hobby and artform, and those who just want a twisty plant in a pot. OP has expressed an interest in pursuing the former, so this will just be part of the learning process.

Well, I'm a beginner and an amateur, this is my second bonsai and I only want to practice it as a hobby, from my point of view this fella is super cute and I like it the way he is.
!
I'm not sure that there are many professional bonsai artists on this forum here... Some however have been involved in this as a hobby for a very long time, and have some very good pieces.. I do not belong to that group.. neither in my involvement with bonsai nor good pieces... I came on this forum with a semi know-it-all attitude, and was also quickly told, the tree in a pot that I had was not bonsai, and probably will never be one... while the comments came off as arragant to me, I percieved the person I was communicating with, knew more about the subject than I did, because I listened, and looked for more information, the tree that I first came on this forum with is still alive and has done well, and I have been able to learn and buy better material... and keep most of the trees that I have alive.

Hi, your tree is a 名媛直播, maybe not the prime material, but let me tell you something; I had a long discussion with one of the best 名媛直播 Artist in the World Robert Stevens "Black Scissors", he says the direction of a tree should be in the eye of his owner, the time where Japanese styles give the directions are over, it is always in the eye of the beholder. To many regulations are killing the new comers and new ideas where trees could take forms that will change generations. So go for what you feel like. However some of the rules should be considered until one understands the art. The art is keeping the tree alive while you learn and progress your knowledge, this is the only way you will enjoy and learn. Don't be discouraged by some, enjoy what you are doing. Keep learning and have fun. I am progressing since 1984, many trees have died through mistakes, some I started in Germany are still with Friends, I am in Indonesia and some of my trees are 25-40 years old. Some are small, some are big, some are nice and some are the way I like them. It does not matter what some people say, as long you are happy, that is the only things that matters. If you continuo learning and make mistakes then and only then you can get better.

I agree that the way a tree is styled should be what the owner likes, but to say that Japanese styles give th directions is over is just not true. There will always be that influence as long as there are bonsai. "Black scisors" movement is a load of weird styles to try to be different,. The art is not keeping a tree alive, that is good practice the art is styling the tree and progressing it over time. Rules are for guidance but may be broken if it suits a style or species.
I could go on but that will suffice for now,
