Chinese Elm in need of rescue was created by Soul Doubt

Hi there, I'm new to this forum and have had my Chinese Elm for about 8 months. For the majority of the time it has been a happy tree. Indoors on a south facing window sil with a Voile to filter the light. When I bought it I was advised to immerse it in water just over the lip of its pot and leave for a few minutes then drain. I was advised to do this every four days but I've since learned to only water it when the soil is dry.

In the last month the tree has reached the state you can see in the picture. Barely any leaves left and they are dry, discoloured. I'm at odds on whether I've been watering it too much or not at all. I've also been giving it a small amount of the solvable food shown in the picture every week or so. Right now, there isn't much growth going on although there are one or two tiny leaves growing.

I'd appreciate any advise on this one, concerned the tree is dying and the way I'm watering it is not helping.

Thanks!

Unless you can see any green buds then the plant is dead. It should have been outside anyway not in. You have not been watering correctly and before you get another you need to learn how to water. The fertiliser has not helped as it looks to have been dead for some time.

Thanks for the info. I'm hoping it's not dead so will pop it outside and see if it improves. The gentleman who sold it to me said it was an indoor bonsai, so I wasn't under the impression it had to be outside.

They're one of the less difficult species for indoors, but they need lots of light to compensate. The voile to filter the light was probably not a good idea. Watering once it's dried out sounds like leaving it a bit too late, they shouldn't ever be actually dry. The soil tends to be crappy on these too, so you need to make sure it's thoroughly saturated when you water. Probably too late to help for this one though.

I'm pretty new to bonsai, but my chinese elm is 100% more healthy since I moved it and left it outside. Anytime I moved it, while it was indoors, it would shed leaves, it's growth was always very slow, and sparse.. since being outside, it has exploded, and some variance in it's position has not caused the slightest leaf drop. I would say that the outside conditions do not vary as much as inside conditions.. with regard to light and humidity.
