How can I help my ficus bonsai?

My students gave me a bonsai tree for my birthday back in June. They know I like them, but that I was never brave enough to get one as I was afraid I wouldn't know how to look after it.
Like I said, I have it since June and everything had been going fine. I went away for 2 weeks holiday and asked my mother to drop by and water the plants. She watered all my plants a lot less than I usually do and now most of them are in a terrible state. All the leaves on the ficus turned brown and fell. All of them.
I've watered it, used fertiliser, but is there anything else I should be doing?
Thank you so much for your feedback.

Oh, the horror of dead holiday returns.
This tree is very near dead, if not dead. All the sections where the bark gas gone wrinkly are dead. With luck, there my be live still in the lower trunk.
Do NOT fertilize. Wait, waterr sparingly. If in a few weeks no new buds have appeared on the trunk, it is dead..

Follow leatherback say. If you manage somehow to revive it, repot once you get good leaf growth back. Ficus prefer slightly dry soil.. I water mines not more once a week even in the heat waves we got the recent months.

By the way, make sure it gets good amount of direct sun. Ficus just love sun.

Your tree does not have so bad character, I like it. I will be happy if you manage to revive it and make something good out of it. Good luck.

Had exact same issue with mine around the same time! What a coincidence ) I agree with previous post: just wait and see if you get new branches from lower trunk. That's exactly what happened to mine.

UPDATE
So, I did what was suggested. I moved it to a sunnier spot, hardly ever watered it. And still, nothing. Everyone kept telling me it was dead and that I should just throw it away. But I couldn't bring myself to do it. This morning I was watering the plants and I saw something green Here are the pictures. Can you please, please, give me some more advice? What should I do next? Re-pot it? Use fertilizer?
Thank you so much!
