Hello. My nabor is moving and he gave me this tree. Not exactly sure what it is or if it would make a good bonsai or not. I have seen similar trees as bonsai but don't know were to begin, any tips would be great.

This is thuja. I have never used it for bonsai, as they are dificult to get to backbud. I know some people make nice trees out of them. The trunk on this specimen however does not look too promising for bonsai, I am afraid..

Thank you sir. I wasn't quite sure. The trunk has some minor movement! I have noticed some back budding but not as far back as I would like to see. Any tips on making it a nice tree? I was thinking about air layering it.

I have a Tusga (western hemlock) and it looks nothing like this!
It looks to me like a lawsonnia. Certainly not a tree to bonsai in afraid.

I did more research and it is a eastern white cedar. I have done some work to it.

That's what Leatherback said. By the way, Thuja is not Tsuga.

I know that's what lb said, I looked it up and double checked and it's spot on. I did do some work on it, no root work but I did do some wiering and created some movement in the trunk. I hope to make a decent bonsai out of it in the future years. I will post pics as the progression continues.
