Hey everyone
I recently brought my first bonsai it's a red dawn tree. When I got it from the garden centre the leaves have alll ready started to go brown I am a complete newbie and I'd like to know if this is normal or wether or not the tree hasn't been looked after properly. Also when I got it there was a gap between the soil and the pot see pictures attached?
Thanks

Actually, it is a Dawn Redwood, in need of pruning and plenty of water lack of which is the possible cause of the yellowing leaves

Yeah sorry that's what I meant to put and I just got off the phone to the garden centre and I asked if there was a possibility of its being scorched and they said yes when we had those hot weeks it was outside in direct sunlight. I have watered it plenty now soil is moist. Also I took a look at the roots there's doesn't seem to be any dead ones but reading online there's meant to be covers over the drainage holes in the pot and there isn't shall I put some in?
Thanks

There should not be any solid covers or anything else over the drainage holes that would block water. If you meant screens that go over the holes, then those are used to keep the soil from falling out of the holes. If your soil is staying in place, then don't worry about screens (for now).
On the other hand, proper bonsai soil is loose with fairly coarse particles that fall through the holes easily if you don't have screens, so it's possible that you have regular potting soil in your pot instead of bonsai soil. This is not really good, and you'll do better with proper bonsai soil, which you can order online if your garden center doesn't carry it.
Good luck!

This species needs a lot of water, and that is probably why some of the leaves are yellow, it won't cause a problem. The time to repot if it is needed is the spring before the buds break. If the soil is not draining well it is not a probem. I stand mine in water during the summer. The drainage holes should have mesh to stop the soil washing out, not blocked. I think you might be in the UK, where are you? Have a look around there may be a bonsai nursery near you where you can get things that you need including soil. Much better than ordering on the internet.
