Here's a tree I've had for a while... It seems happy in its pot and likes to be defoliated.
Is it a beech or birch?

From its leaf structure, I'd say it's a birch.

Hello, it is certainly not a birch. And probably not a beech too.
I would guess it is some kind of hornbeam or elm.
You should check out the species before you do defoliations.
Beeches for example do not tolerate full defoliation.

Partial defoliation is the option, but why to defoliate a young tree that has a long way to become a bonsai?
Defoliation is for the more developed trees.
You need a lot of growth first on this one so you need leaves.
To not get dieback on branches that are shaded by large leaves, cut only the leaves that are too big and leave just 1/3 of every larger leave.

The leaves look a lot like an elm, especially the way they grow out of the branches.. it doesn't look like the hornbeam that I have.. but it is difficult to tell.
