Japanese maple seeds still good to grow?

I acquired a bunch of Japanese maple seeds a few months ago, and after reading a bunch of ways to start them, I soaked them in water for 24 hours and let them stand out on my windowsill since I felt my dorm's minifridge might be too cold (put some vegetables in there and they froze). Anyway, I've recently planted 4 seeds about a month ago with nothing happening yet. I'm wondering if the seeds might have gone bad/died? I still have a few more, but don't want to plant them if nothing will happen. How long does it take for a seedling to pop up? Also, the little spots on them were not present (or at least were not visibly noticeable) when I got them.

maple seeds need to be fresh, and they need a period of stratification in order to break dormancy. Best would be t sow them in fall and place the pot outside.
