Hi, I purchased this amazing Fukien Tea from Brussel's 名媛直播. When I received in the mail, of course, the leaves were wilted and the tree didn't look so healthy because it was in a box with no sun light for almost a week. (I wouldn't look so good being a box for a week either) I went and purchased a 75w grow light from Home Depot and have been using it over the plant with a timer set to turn the light on from 5am-12pm. I also have the tree placed in my only south facing window in my home but I live in New Jersey and the homes are really close together so I'm not quite sure exactly home much light the tree is getting from the natural sun. I've had thew tree for almost a week and about 30 leaves have fallen off. Annnnnndddd finally my questions are; how many hours of light per day should my Fukien tea get? Is this Phillip's 75w grow light sufficient for providing the extra light needed? Should I be alarmed about the leaves falling off at that rate? Will the right amount of light stop the leaves from falling?

I do not know and I think not many people on this forum do. Thing is that most people that are really into growing bonsai, do not grow bonsai indoors. The ones that do grow trees indoors, usually are not successful. See the sheer volume of posts about indoor plants that are not doing well.

Brussels bonsai... I do NOT want to know how much you paid for it as it will make me angry.

If you need tips about care for this plant, why not contact them, by the way?

I didn't think the price was bad at all based on other sites. I ordered it through Home Depot and Brussel's was the supplier. It came with a humidity tray and stones. Other sites were charging another $25 for that.

I am no expert when it comes to 名媛直播 or growing trees indoors. In watching this forum over the past several months most failures seem to be people trying to grow indoors.

However I do have experience growing vegetables indoors. What you have there looks like a very inexpensive grow light. The problem with most of these is they are not bright. On top of that you have it way to far away from the foliage. With cheap grow lights you often need to have the light inches from the foliage. You can see the problem once you do that you won't be covering the whole tree with light. When I grow my veggies indoors my grow light is on for about 16 hours per day. So it seems like you are off there too. The light you have would be ok for starting vegetable seeds indoors but really not much more.

1-) Trees are meant to be outdoors.
2-) Your growing lamp is too weak and is too far away from the plant.
3-) Your window light is not very appropriate for this plant.
OK, the leaves can fall off for many reasons besides light; stress, adapting to a new environment, watering...

1. so I should bring my plant outside unit it gets below 60 degrees?
2. So how many watts should my bulb be? And how many hours should I give the plant?
3. Unfortunately its my only south window in the house :( I have a great west window but the summer afternoon sun has been brutal on my other plants and burned them in the past. Not sure if I want to risk that with this Fukien

I am not familiar with the light needs of your tree. I am just getting into bonsai and have 2 jaboticabas (tropical trees) that I got as part of a bonsai class I took. They are currently outside and will be until the daily lows are below 50 Deg F. My plan afterwards is a south facing window or a grow tent in my basement. The grow tent has a heater mat, reflective Mylar walls and a 110 watt solarflare led grow light. The tent stays around 64-66 deg F. Do I know this will work for me? No but I think it has promise. I will let ypu know in June :)

However from what I have read Jaboticaba are more tolerant than Fukien Teas.

It is possible you can make it work with that 75 watt grow bulb you just will need enough to cover all foliage with the bulbs 6 inch or less from the leaves. It is not about watts so much as light intensity at the foliage.
