I am new to the world of bonsai care and this morning I got the shock of my life

Yesterday I was outside of the house all day so when I went to check on my bonsai, I noticed that there were a lot of fallen leaves and a lot of the leaves were turning grey.

Now there are two theories I have. First, I left my bonsai submerged and extra 30min on accident. I noticed some of the leaves had a white dusting on it and from a quick Google search I learned that that is sometimes an indication of root rot

Second theory, my husbands cat is OBSESSED with attacking plants and she was left unsupervised yesterday. The bonsai is usually in my room but she has recently learned how to open doors.

Please help me figure out whether this is root rot, and if so how do I deal and take care of it? Additionally, if you guys have any other care tips I would love to hear them. I am a newbie to bonsai rearing so all tips are appreciated!

Unclear what the problem might be.It could be roots.

One thing.. Is it inside? Put it outside. It is a plant, not a decoration item.

Do not water by putting it in a container full of water. Water with a watering can with a rain nozzle attached. Water when the soil starts to dry out.
Potting soil makes it harder to keep shrubs happy. I would consider to in spring repot this in a better draining soil.
