Hello all,

I just started this bonsai-hobby a half year ago and I got so excited, that I picked up a Larch from wild in late spring (I didn't know better). I put it in a pot and place in sunny place. Unfortunately summer heat-wave came and I realized too late that this "sunny place" is too much for the tree. I put the tree into more shade and I water it a little bit more, but all the needles turned brown now. I believe the tree survived but it was a close call...

Could you advise what should I do to "ease the pain" for the tree? I don't think the growth will go on this year due all the stress but I would like to save it for next spring growth. I can provide some pics if you prefer..

Thank you for all your advises.

Please yes, post some pictures, it's easier to advise when one can see the tree.

Here are some pictures from yesterday (sorry for the low quality, but I'm working whole week and coming home when it's dark). But you can probably see the needles fell of and the rest is the same color as the table (almost).

I will attach better pics in couple of days.

Thanks.

I'm going to guess that the pot got so hot the roots got burned.
The tree looks dead to me.

I would say that the tree got very dry and that is what has killed it. Larch do not like extreme heat anyway, but as long as there is water at the roots they are usually fine. Many of mine have some damage from the heat, but they will recover in time because I watered some days three times.

I don't think it will survive. The tree looks pretty dry itself. As Auk has said, Pots getting very hot in the summer with direct sun on them for hours and hours worry me, as I live in a tropical country. What to do to keep the pots cool, bury them?

So today I cut a bit of bark out on the trunk to see if the tree is realy dead. I also tried to bend some branches and they seem quite flexible, but that does not mean much I guess...
Could you please confirm what you think of the tree?

Thank you.

My larch dropped its needles in autumn like it should. Then, it got a bit warmer and it leafed out. Not a good idea, as, when it got colder again, the new growth died off. This spring I saw green spots in the center of the brown bunches of needles, buds formed and it leafed out again. It's looking pretty good now.

You can try and continue to give it proper care - but reduce the watering as it will not evaporate much. You'll know next spring.

You should not have made that big wound though, it doesn't help the tree.
