I live in S.Florida where we get no cold weather, is it pointless to try and grow a Japanese Maple?

Some people are succesfull growing them using a fridge to cool the tree for a few months ber year. This is however not easy to do.

I would recommend sticking to species that thrive in your region, especially if you are just starting ut.

Agreed, I'm in central FLA and am doing well with stuff that either is native or lives well here.Bald Cypress, red maple, juniper, ilex, etc. Look at what does well in the landscape in your area first.

Take it from a guy who actually tried green maple in Southern Arizona, stay away. Could you keep the tree alive with a lot of work and sacrifice? Maybe, but the tree will never thrive enough or be healthy enough for you to put it through a bonsai operation. Eventually, the tree will just weaken and die. I've had good luck with Jade, ficus, junipers and bougainvillea. I'm even trying some other types, that grow well here, but aren't typically used for bonsai. Best of luck!
