New ficus bonsai from cut - leaves going down was created by Gambod
Posted 7 years 6 months ago #34289My name is Dominic and I'm pretty new (totally new) in the bonsai art. I've bough a fully grown ficus from which I cut a branch and started a bonsai from it. Planted it and gave it some root booster a week ago. I noticed the leaves tends to be bending down more and more and last time I touched it it seems a bit dry. I watered it a bit more since it's been a week I did.
Is this a sign that it is slightly dying ? Ficus bonsai is inside right beside a big kitchen window and is getting the noon, PM, evening sun.
See attachment if needed.
Thank you very much
Dominic.

You didn't.
You are trying to grow a plant from a cutting, and it will be many years before you can train it to become a bonsai.
Let it grow, if it survives..

Ficuses are tropical trees. They need plenty of water and humidity, and light, and fresh air. When growing from seeds or cuttings, first wait for the roots to establish themselves, second water to make the soil moist but never overdo it, third keep it outside but in the shade until it grows new leaves.
Watering weekly is a sure way to kill it.

Yes, it is.

It should be outside, and usually kitchens are not very good for plants, mainly concerning fresh air and temperature variations.
Anyway, please take a look about how to care for your Ficus below (and elsewhere):

Posted 7 years 6 months ago #34292Thank you very much for you anwsers (and for confirming the fact that I'm killing my plant). I moved it outdoor in a not to sunny/shadowy place. I will make sure it stays humid without drowning it. Few questions if you allow me:
- Should I take it indoor in case of heavy rain ?
- Should I continue adding root booster weekly until it looks beter ?
- Is indoor that dangerous for the ficus ? (note that I have AC which might not help it).
Thanks

Posted 7 years 6 months ago #34295While this plant is very young, protect it from strong winds and heavy rains (how heavy? Tempestuous like in the tropics?) just to be sure it will not drown, but you can keep it outside. There are lots and lots of info about making a very simple "personal greenhouse" for your plant, from plastic film to transparent plastic lids.Gambod wrote: - Should I take it indoor in case of heavy rain ?
I have no experience with weekly root booster. With cuttings I use rooting powder before planting them and that's it.Gambod wrote: - Should I continue adding root booster weekly until it looks better ?
No, Ficus is very kind with abuse..Gambod wrote: - Is indoor that dangerous for the ficus ?
Ficus can be grown indoors, provided it has plenty of light, fresh air, no heating close by, and no dry air (which is exactly what air conditioning does, dries the air).

That's right.
Ficus do not like being moved around, and cold drafts make it unhappy.

You are probably mistaking staying alive with doing well. A happy fig in summer situation can grow this every single week. I am in a very temperateclimate, and trim about 1 metre (3,3 ft) of growth each year.

I did also leave out that my grandmother was about to toss the plant out. It was in completely compacted soil. Had not been repotted in 10 years and was littered in spider mites. So ill take the 4 inches over a dead plant. Haha. I was my grandfathers though and im just glad its still around
