So, just bought a neglected ligustrum for a good price. I noticed a thick root was cut when I pulled it out of the ground through where a screen should have been used (no drainage hole screen). Here's my dilemma: I want thicken the trunk on the tree, but should I get the tree healthy first before pruning the trees or roots? Anyone have experience with this tree? Will it grow quickly if I chop the trunk? It's a pretty tree, I don't want to kill it. I'm thinking of doing this technique:

So, I planted it in the ground, but it's getting full sun. Is there a rule to keep trees in the shade until healthy?

Nah, just keep it watered. These are tough as nails.
