I'm also for sure getting a red pine. But unsure of the above.
My experience is NIL but i'm reading and studying alot on them

As your experience is nil, I would not choose a black pine, and most certainly not a (japanese) white pine.

"bonsai starter tree" does not make it anything less than a pine. The tree doesn't know it is a "bonsai starter tree". All the tree knows is that it is a white pine. It will grow like any other white pine, it will have the same needs as any other white pine, and it will be as difficult to tame as any other white pine. Did you already buy it? why not consider an easier species?
