Don't. All of those "starting kits" are cr*ap. and overpriced Other than that, I personally do not recommend starting with Junipers. Yes they make beautiful bonsai and yes they are very very hard to kill and easy to take care of. However, I found out myself last year that making a bonsai, and acquiring experience from a Juniper is very, very difficult, most likely you will end up with a mallsai, The other problem with junipers, is that they grow extremely slowly, and do not backbud very well. For a 名媛直播, you need a thick trunk, and getting a thick trunk on a Juniper takes many years. They also grow so slowly that you won't get as much experience from as you need.

I recommend starting with boxwood. From my own experience, you can find good starting material at regular nursery. Boxwood are not very hard to take care of, they backbud very well, and they grow faster than junipers. They have small leaves, and they usually develop decent branch structure as bushes, so getting it to starting bonsai material should not be too difficult. Great tree to learn basics, from my own experience.

That is my personal advice, and maybe you are more talented than I am and might be ok with Juniper. So if you are set to start with a Juniper, I suggest you go to a real bonsai nursery. This is going to be expensive, but if you have the money and don't mind spending, that's the place to start. At a real bonsai nursery you can find help and good starting Juniper. I do have a Juniper (Procumbens), not the nana, the big one. I found it after looking for months in nursery shops, it has a really nice trunk, but needs a lot and lots of work. It is sitting on a big big pot, and it is a long term project. I will probably start working on it in a few years from now, when I am more experienced, and ready for it.

Not sure if I agree, I kinda like the starterkits for beginners to start out with. Better than buying a ready-made indoor tree!

Perhaps I just had more luck with boxwood :). But why buy a starter kit? when you can get a Juniper like in the picture for $5 at a nursery?. Where I live I can find older boxwoods for relatively cheap price in nursery shops, and I've found out they backbud very well, grow faster than junipers, and can also be wired relatively easy. I was much more satisfied with the work I performed on boxwoods, than I did with junipers when starting. But it could be a personal thing.

I guess it depends a lot on what you are buying. If it includes a small fisherman, white pebbles and a rake... probably not. While looking for bonsai kits to compare, I noticed someone at Alibaba liked your video:

This is a $5 (usd) blue rug juniper in a $7 (usd) pot. The trunk is a little over 1" thick. A lot of rain and some trimming I hope accounts for the brown tips. It's not show quality but I dig the bark...the Jin needs work too. But I think it's better than a kit.. my opinion..

I agree with the post above. Junipers and a misleading choice for beginning in bonsai. There are 100 different websites that'll send you one, but buying online is expensive. Those big beautiful junipers you see in pictures are very old and have been crafted by very experienced bonsai artists. They are slow growing, but very easy to care for and should be outside year round. Depending on where you live, try a native tree. The best part about native trees, is that they are usually free! Just get permission before digging them up from the land owner. I have plenty of local trees, maples, pines and spruces in my collection that only cost me the soil and a cheap training pot. But, if you insist on a juniper, any reputable bonsai online store will be happy to send you a starter kit, plus they will probably give you decent soil with it. I dont want to plug another website here, but i have bought online and can send you a link in a private message. Finally, the BEST place to get trees is your nearest bonsai specific nursery or local bonsai club. Hope this helps.
